A day-long program designed to help education professionals be guided, and equipped to use evidence in their practice

Evidence for Learning’s Evidence Exchange 2016 brought together national and international experts to generate and cultivate practical classroom and school solutions that can have a significant impact on the achievement gap in Australian education.

On Thursday 27 October 2016, Evidence for Learning brought together world-renowned international research evidence authority Dr Jonathan Sharples, Senior Researcher, Education Endowment Foundation, Australian experts and peers to share their experience and knowledge on the interaction between research, policy and practice.

Impetus: A policy maker’s perspective

Robert Randall, CEO, the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA)

Understanding how to use NAPLAN data to generate evidence to identify and frame a specific improvement challenge. The session will provide an outline of the development and implementation of NAPLAN online, the links between Literacy and Numeracy as represented in the NAPLAN tests, as well as student growth as measured through the Literacy/​Numeracy continuum’s of the Australian Curriculum.

Cath Apanah will highlight the practical use of the NAPLAN data to generate evidence and identify and frame a specific improvement challenge. This session will draw on the Persuasive Writing Marking Guide by ACARA.

Using NAPLAN data, this session looks at how to determine an effect size to generate evidence to identify and frame a specific improvement challenge. Attendees will be asked to identify a specific improvement challenge within their school.

Understanding of how to: consult various sources of information to determine one possible approach to the challenge; assess approaches for relative strengths and limitations relevance to context.

Kevin Mackay will highlight the practical use of the Teaching & Learning Toolkit, looking at the awareness and analysis stage in the Impact Evaluation Cycle with a particular focus on the Mastery Learning approach.

How are educators using the Teaching & Learning Toolkit? This session will explore one approach in depth that is of relevance to your school. The choice of the approach is to be linked to the specific improvement challenge as identified by you.

How do others adopt and adapt? Dr Jonathan Sharples will explain and give an understanding of guidance reports and their usefulness to school leaders during the adoption and adaption phase. This session will provide an understanding of engagement with the profession through: Campaigns (Teaching Assistants and Literacy); Research champions; Research schools and; Research learning communities.

Implementation: A researcher’s perspective

Jordana Hunter, Fellow, School Education Program, Grattan Institute

This session will work focus on Grattan Institute’s report Targeted Teaching: how better use of data can improve student learning.’ It will look closely at how to: act, evaluate and adjust; implement an approach as outlined in a specific plan; collect data on effectiveness and efficiency of the approach to substantiate hypotheses and; use data to fine tune elements of the intervention.
