Evidence for Learning: Submission to the ACT Department of Education’s Literacy and Numeracy Inquiry

Submission to the ACT Department of Education’s Literacy and Numeracy Inquiry

E4L’s submission to the ACT Department of Education’s Literacy and Numeracy Inquiry.

Summary

In December 2023, the Expert Panel for the Inquiry into literacy and numeracy in ACT public schools put a call out for public submissions to inform advice that will be given to the Minister for Education and Youth Affairs on opportunities to strengthen literacy and numeracy outcomes in ACT public schools while focusing on equity.

Evidence for Learning’s (E4L) submission focused on three of the panel’s terms of reference:

  1. Class, whole-school and system-wide approaches and supports that have been proven to improve learning outcomes for all students at each stage of learning and development.
  2. Specific approaches and supports that are relevant to the learning outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, neurodiverse learners, students with learning difficulties, students with disability and other equity cohorts.
  3. Effective and sustainable implementation methods, considering workload implications for educators, support staff and school leaders.

The submission drew on E4L’s global and Australian evidence bases, and the experience of evidence-informed approaches and implementation in the Australian education landscape.
